In the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing, Grammy and Golden Globe Award-winning musician and songwriter Neil Diamond become an inspirational figure in the city’s recovery efforts. Diamond, who was moved to write about the incomprehensible tragedy that rocked the city on April 15, 2013, will be nationally debuting “Freedom Song (They’ll Never Take Us Down),” on the 33rd annual broadcast of A CAPITOL FOURTH airing on WMHT Thursday, July 4, 2013 at 8:00 and 9:30 p.m. ET. 100% of the proceeds from the song sales will benefit One Fund Boston and the Wounded Warrior Project. America’s National Independence Day celebration is broadcast live from the West Lawn of the US Capitol before a concert audience of hundreds of thousands, millions more at home, as well as to our troops serving around the world on the American Forces Network. The program can also be heard live in stereo over NPR member stations nationwide.
“I, like so many other Americans, felt helpless during the recent attacks in Boston and wanted so much to reach out and not only help those people affected in a direct way but to lift their spirits as well and let them know they were not alone; that the entire American community felt a close kinship with them,” shared Diamond. “I was inspired to devote myself to the creation of a new song which expressed my love for this country and its two greatest assets: the spirit of its people and the freedoms it has afforded
us all by law.”
