Alessandro Brustenghi is a modest friar living in a community of Franciscans around the hilltop monastery in Assisi, Italy. He’s also the first friar in history to land a major record deal, a crossover tenor with three albums under his belt, or in this case, under his traditional friar’s white rope belt, which signifies his commitment to monastic life. In this solo concert, the Decca recording artist and UK Classic BRIT Award nominee performs in the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, the hilltop church that attracts some four million visitors a year to the burial place of St. Francis. One of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage in Italy, the basilica is decorated with astonishingly beautiful medieval frescoes by Giotto that cover the entire exterior of the upper sanctuary.
Friar Alessandro is a charming and spiritual young man with a big operatic tenor voice whose musical message of hope, peace and brotherly love is resonating with audiences across Europe and America.
In THE VOICE FROM ASSISI, he is accompanied by the Orchestra da Camera di Perugia, the choir of the Basilica, and a children’s choir, the Coro Aurora. The repertoire of the program includes traditional sacred songs like “Panis Angelicus” and “Ave Maria,” as well as additional spiritual selections such as “Here I Am, Lord” and “Gaelic Blessing.”
FRIAR ALESSANDRO: THE VOICE FROM ASSISI features these performances:
“Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace”
“Fratello Sole Sorella Luna”
“Here I Am Lord”
“Con Te Gesu”
“Le Lodi Di Dio”
“Resta Con Noi, Signore, La Sera”
“A Gaelic Blessing”
Alessandro Giacomo Brustenghi was born in Perugia, Italy, in 1978. From his childhood he had a passion for music and this continued into his studies both at the Istituto Magistrale Musicale A. Pieralli, in his native city, and later at the Morlacchi music conservatory where he studied organ, musical composition and voice. Together with his passion for music he was drawn to religious life and at the age of 21 entered as a postulant in the Order of the Friars Minor of Umbria, taking his final vows as a Franciscan friar some ten years later. It was in fact the desire to join the Order which pushed him to complete his qualification at the musical conservatory as it was considered a touchstone for the seriousness of his commitment. At present he lives at the Porziuncola Friary in Santa Maria degli Angeli, Assisi, where he works as a carpenter and gives singing lessons. He also animates the religious celebrations, playing the organ and singing with the choir or as a soloist.
