Health Link Clip 'n Carry - Stuttering On the Job
When we think of stuttering we generally think of children. But the fact is, with more than 3 million stutterers in this country, it's estimated 1 in 100 adults, stutters. This can make for employment difficulties. So, the Stuttering Foundation of America suggests adults who stutter be pro-active.

  • Be involved in therapy.
  • Explain to your employer what you are and are not comfortable, doing.
  • Be sure your employer knows your stuttering is 'not' about nerves, fear or emotional conflict - that you're just as intelligent and confident as the non-stutterer.
  • Be clear that the condition does not affect your abilities.
  • If your company has an Employee Assistance Program it can be helpful by maintaining information on stuttering so that employees with questions for themselves and their children can be referred to the appropriate professionals.

For more information:
The Stuttering Foundation of America has been around for more than 50 years. It offers a wealth of brochures and videotapes on many stuttering-related topics (such as working with teachers, finding a therapist, paying for therapy, treatments for teens, and so on). The cost for these materials is very low ($1 to about $5). The foundation also coordinates conferences and training symposia that can be of help to parents.
