TOPIC: Lyme Disease and West Nile

Beware - it's bite season! With the summer months comes a need for increased awareness about West Nile virus and Lyme disease. On the next Health Link we'll be giving you some practical information on preventing mosquito and tick bites, along with what you need to know in case you do get bitten. We'll also meet some folks who know first hand what it is like to live with the debilitating consequences of undetected Lyme disease.

GUESTS:

Richard Horowitz, M.D.
Dr. Horowitz is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Horowitz and his wife, Lee, founded the Hudson Valley Healing Arts Center in Hyde Park, New York, an integrative medical center where complementary modalities are blended with western medicine for a total approach to health and wellness. He specializes in diagnosis and treatment of Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses. He is an internist with 20 years of experience in treating over 4000+ cases of persistent (late) Lyme disease. He is currently the First VP for the International Lyme & Associated Disease Society, Inc. ILADS, www.ilads.org. He is the former Assistant Director of Medicine at Vassar Brothers Hospital.

Timothy J. Sellati, PhD
Dr. Sellati is an assistant professor in the Center for Immunology and Microbial Disease at Albany Medical College. He has been involved in Lyme disease research for several years under various grants including those from the Arthritis Foundation and the NIH. His studies have identified key molecules on the surface of white blood cells that protect individuals against the chronic and progressive inflammation associated with Lyme disease and other bacterial infections. More importantly, his research indicates that differences in the relative level of these molecules on an individual's white cells may influence whether they develop mild or more severe symptoms associated with bacterial infections.
