Knee Repair and Replacement

Over the last 25 years, major advancements in artificial knee replacement have greatly improved the outcome of surgery.  On the next Health Link we will examine the most common troubles affecting our knees and the latest in treatment options.  From ACL repair to a computer-assisted navigation system similar to GPS that helps surgeons perfect minimally invasive joint replacement.

J. David Abraham, MD
Dr. Abraham, a specialist in sports injuries and joint replacement surgery, merged his private practice with Northeast Orthopaedics upon its inception in 1995. A Delmar native, he graduated from Bethlehem Central High School, and received his undergraduate degree from Colby College. He is a graduate of Albany Medical College where he also did his residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery, completing his training in 1984 and receiving board certification in 1985. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American College of Sports Medicine and the New York State Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Abraham practices in all areas of orthopaedic surgery with special interests in sports medicine, joint replacement surgery and spine surgery. He is currently using the latest technology called "computer assisted surgery" for his total knee replacements.
 
He has been team physician for both professional and college sports teams in the area including the Albany River Rats (AHL), Albany Choppers (IHL), Albany Capitals (NASL), New York Kick (Indoor Professional Soccer), SUNY Albany Basketball and Siena College Football. An avid hockey fan and player, he has also coached youth hockey in the Troy-Albany Youth Hockey Organization for the last seven years and has served as a board member for the organization.

Dr. Abraham is the managing partner of Northeast Orthopaedics and  served as the Chairman of the Medical Staff at St. Peter's Hospital from January of 2002 through December of 2003. He is also the team physician for Albany Academy for Boys.

Richard Alfred, MD
Dr. Alfred joined Capital Region Orthopaedic Group in 1988.  Dr. Alfred is a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon, specializing in sports medicine. He currently serves Capital Region Ambulatory Surgery Center as Medical Director. Dr. Alfred participates with the following sports programs as Team Physician:

His orthopedic surgery residency was done at Albany Medical Center Hospital. He was a junior resident in General Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Jay Peacock, PT 
Jay is the clinical Supervisor at Thomas Nicolla Physical Therapy of Albany located at the Bone and Joint Center.  He received his Bachelor's Degree in Sports and Exercise Science from the University of Buffalo, along with a minor in Athletic Training. He obtained a second degree from Syracuse University at Utica College in Physical Therapy.  Jay is a certified athletic trainer and strength and conditioning specialist. He also is very involved in functional capacity evaluations.
Jay also has many affiliations, including the Upstate Center for Performance Enhancement, College of St. Rose Athletics, Siena College Athletics, Mohawks Baseball, and various high school athletic programs.

Alison J. Finger, ND
Alison J. Finger is a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine at the Center for Integrative Health and Healing located in Delmar.  Dr. Finger is a Licensed Naturopathic Physician, Connecticut (New York does not currently license naturopathic physicians, a licensing program is under development).  She holds a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from National College of Naturopathic Medicine, Portland, Oregon and a B.A. in Anthropology from the University at Buffalo.  She is a member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and a member of New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
