Fibromyalgia Syndrome is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread pain and severe fatigue.  The condition is often misunderstood and mistakenly diagnosed.   For those with severe symptoms, FMS can be extremely debilitating.  This week on Health Link we will help you understand the symptoms and bring you up to date on the latest in treatment and research. 

James Strosberg, MD, FACP
Dr. James Strosberg has been an attending physician at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital and Ellis Hospital in Schenectady since 1976. He is also an adjunct professor in clinical medicine (rheumatology) at Albany Medical College in Albany.  Dr. Strosberg is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Rheumatology, and the American Board of Geriatrics. Additionally, he is a member of the American Rheumatism Association, the American Academy of Geriatrics, the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of the State of New York, and the Schenectady County Medical Society.

Patricia Fennell, MSW, LCSW-R
Patricia Fennell is the CEO of Albany Health Management Associates, Inc., an organization that provides counseling and case management for the chronically ill, consulting and education for their employers, professional training for the clinicians who care for them, and collaborative research for the international scientific community. Ms. Fennell is an innovator in the chronic illness and mental health fields, and she created the internationally recognized Fennell Four-Phase Treatment (FFPT)TM approach for understanding and treating chronic syndromes. The model has been translated into several languages and is used by clinicians, researchers, and patients worldwide.  Pat Fennell is a theorist, researcher, and author of several scholarly and popular books and articles, including The Chronic Illness Workbook, Managing Chronic Illness Using the Four-Phase Treatment Approach, and The Handbook of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.  Pat Fennell was recently nominated to serve as a scientific advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Health and was asked to participate as a peer reviewer for the American Pain Society. She was also appointed to serve on an allied health care advisory committee for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Pat Fennell has received numerous professional and community honors and serves on the boards of several national medical and professional organizations, including the Editorial Board of the Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, the Board of Directors of the International Association for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, and the Advisory Board of the National Fibromyalgia Association.

Barb Bruso
Barb Bruso was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia Syndrome in 1985.  She is a retired school teacher and the mother of four.  Barb will share with us what it is like to live with the condition.
