The AIDS Council of Northeastern New York is a not-for-profit human service agency whose mission is to reduce the risk, fear and incidence of HIV infection, encourage the independence of people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS and promote understanding of their needs. The council provides education and outreach to at-risk individuals and the general public, offer direct assistance and service coordination for people living with HIV/AIDS and serve as public advocates. The AIDS Council of Northeastern New York provides services to over 1,000 persons living with HIV or AIDS and their family members each year. Since 1984, the AIDS Council has made over half a million contacts through prevention training and outreach. Serving Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren, and Washington Counties, with transportation services available to Delaware and Otsego Counties. Programs and activities offered are designed to improve health, reduce stress, and increase quality of life. In May 1987, the NYS Department of Health designated Albany Medical Center as a regional AIDS Treatment Center, charged with the provision of a wide range of services to people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and AIDS. The designation as an AIDS Treatment Center allows for increased services, coordinated care, and a wider range of programs than would otherwise be available. It sponsors an annual conference to educate Black clergy and mainstream service providers about the need for targeted prevention services to African-Americans.
