Love for Levon

No one represents American music more than Levon Helm. Songs like “Life is a Carnival,” “Rag Mama Rag,” “Ophelia,” and “The Weight” tell stories of life, love, loss, and truth, ingrained in our hearts and minds by the unmistakable voice and backbeat of Levon Helm. In recent years, albums like “Dirt Farmer” and his homegrown “Midnight Rambles” reinforced the notion that Levon was both a musical treasure and a great soul. Nearly 50 years after his booming first notes hit the airwaves and almost six months since his passing, Levon Helm’s legacy is being honored and celebrated as never before in LOVE FOR LEVON. Watch Friday, May 3, 2013 at 8pm on WMHT.

On October 3, 2012, at the Izod Center in New Jersey, a star-studded once-in-a-lifetime benefit concert took place to celebrate Helm’s life and music, and to raise funds to support his lasting legacy, with net proceeds going to ensure that Levon’s home, barn and studio remain in the hands of his family. Produced by Keith Wortman, the concert featuring performances by friends and admirers pays tribute to Helm and his music, but also to his roots and heritage. Grammy® winner Don Was and legendary guitarist (and Levon Helm band leader) Larry Campbell served as musical directors for the concert that highlights the career of one of American music’s most legendary figures. From country to rockabilly to blues to rock, the show offers Helm classics, new interpretations and inspired standards.

To ensure authenticity to Helm’s vision, the concert event was produced with the support of Amy Helm, Sandy Helm, and Helm manager Barbara O’Brien.

LOVE FOR LEVON features these performances:

  • Gregg Allman and Warren Haynes – “Long Black Veil”
  • Mavis Staples – “Move Along Train”
