Here's How it Works
All you need is a clear title, and we'll take care of the rest, including pick-up, at no cost to you. Once your vehicle has been sold, you'll be sent a receipt for your tax records, and the sale proceeds will be donated to WMHT in your name. You'll receive a one-year membership to WMHT at the membership level that coincides with your donation amount.

WMHT benefits by receiving a cash donation to fund our new and existing programs and increase community awareness through local events. You benefit by being able to reduce your taxable income when taxes are itemized. Plus you avoid the costs associated with selling your car. No need to pay for advertising, no loss of privacy and possible security risk, and no need to pay for vehicle registration, insurance, and repairs to keep your car in running condition while you wait for a buyer. return to top Does WMHT handle everything for me? WMHT is partnered with a company called CARS (Charitable Auto Resources , Inc) based in San Diego California. WMHT and CARS have a contractual agreement to process all vehicle donations. CARS is owned and operated by a non-profit social service agency that works with many public broadcasting stations and other non profit organizations across the country in outsourcing their vehicle donation program. WMHT screened CARS thoroughly for customer service policies and references and selected them among many organizations. They have been chosen because of their expertise, and all calls and issues will ultimately be referred to CARS. return to top Do you only accept cars for donation? Many types of motor vehicles are accepted including boats, motorcycles, trucks, and cars. If you are uncertain as to whether or not your vehicle is eligible, please contact the WMHT vehicle donation program toll free at 866-964-8409. return to top What does WMHT do with donated vehicles? The vehicles are sold at a private auction. The funds from vehicle donations are used by WMHT to support and produce quality educational and entertainment programs as well as to support our outreach efforts in our community. return to top Does my car have to be running to qualify for donation? No, the car must have an engine, tires, and be towable. Cars that are in extremely poor condition or far from our tow range may have to be declined, as the cost to tow them may be more than the value of the vehicle. Call our customer service representative to find out if your vehicle qualifies. return to top What paperwork do I need? The only paperwork needed is a signed, clear title. (Please note: a clear title indicates the title is in the name of the donor without a lien.) return to top What if my car won't pass the state inspection? We can accept vehicles without a state inspection sticker or current registration as long as there is a clear title. return to top What if I lost the title? You will need to get a duplicate title and call us when you have received it. We can not pick up your vehicle if you do not have the title. Contact your state registry of motor vehicles department. Unfortunately neither WMHT nor CARS can help you in this process. return to top Do I get a receipt for my donation? Yes, our driver will issue a tow receipt at the time of pick-up. This is not your final tax receipt. The tow receipt will indicate your name, the year, make, model and the condition of the vehicle you are donating. A tax receipt with our Federal ID number will be mailed to you within 30 days of the sale stating the amount of gross proceeds received from your vehicle. This will be your receipt for your charitable contribution. return to top What can I claim as a deduction? Donors can claim the amount for which the vehicle sold as a deduction on their itemized tax return. You will be sent a tax receipt with this amount when the vehicle sells. If the claimed value of the donated vehicle exceeds $500, the taxpayer is limited to the gross proceeds of the sale. return to top Do I need to have my vehicle appraised? You are not required to have vehicles appraised. The value you may claim will be the amount of the gross proceeds received from your vehicle. return to top How long will it take to pick up my vehicle? We try to make donating your car as simple and convenient as possible. In some states, vehicles can be picked up the same day. No. Special arrangements can be made by calling our representative. return to top Do I pay for the towing? No, there is no charge to you for the towing return to top Do I become a WMHT member by donating my car? If so, what level of membership will be offered? You will become a member after your car is sold at auction and proceeds are credited to WMHT. Your membership level will be directly in alignment with the amount for which your car sold (for instance, if it sold for $365 or more, you will become a Benefactor's Circle member, if for $100 you will be eligible to be an individual member.) Your membership will be a one year membership featuring a year's subscription to our exclusive monthly member's magazine, Outlook.
