WMHT's RISE

RISE is WMHT's 24 hour radio information service for the blind and print disabled, serving New York's Capital Region and Hudson Valley.

RISE transmits on a subcarrier of the main WMHT-FM signal. Through a specially tuned table-top radio receiver, listeners have access to readings of local and national newspapers, popular periodicals and books, as well as specialty programming.

Receivers are loaned free of charge to eligible applicants.

Eligibility Requirements

Individuals currently registered with the NYS Commission for the Visually Handicapped or the Library of Congress Talking Books Program are automatically eligible for RISE.

Applicants not registered with either of these services must have a visual or physical condition which impedes access to printed material. This condition must be certified by a physician, nurse, social worker, librarian, rehabilitation counselor, or appropriate professional.

Broadcast Area

If you can tune in WMHT-FM on your regular radio at home, you are probably within range to receive RISE. RISE is actually a closed circuit "broadcast". Of course you'll need a special RISE receiver to actually tune to RISE.

Become a RISE Volunteer

In broadcasting for RISE I try to use the same conversational approach I would if I were reading the paper aloud in the living rooms of our listeners.

I have been grateful to WMHT for providing this service from the day I first heard a spot on the evening news asking for volunteers twelve years ago.
