American Graduate FactsEach year, 1.3 million high school students drop out of school in the U.S. That’s one student dropping out every 26 seconds.
That means about 49,000 students, equaling half the population of Albany, drops out each week.

American Graduate Facts•  Overall, 22% of children who have lived in poverty do not graduate from high school compared to 6% of those (children) who have never been poor.
The dropout rate rises to 32% for students spending more than half their childhood in poverty.

 


American Graduate Facts•   One in six children who are not reading proficiently by the third grade fails to graduate from high school on time.
The dropout rate for non-proficient readers in the third grade is four times the rate of children reaching proficiency.


American Graduate Facts•   School to Prison Pipeline Statistics
On any given day, 1 in 10 young males, dropout, is in jail, or in juvenile detention. Nearly 1 of 4 black male dropouts is incarcerated or otherwise institutionalized and 60% of those who are incarcerated in federal prisons are high school dropouts.
