Video | The Soldier's Experience in Vietnam: Using Oral Histories to Draft a Historical Narrative

Posted by WMHT Web Editor on

What does it mean to be a soldier? Help students get to the heart of this question using “The Soldier's Experience in Vietnam,” lesson plan from Illinois Public Media. With supporting video testimonies and photo from the era, students can learn to create a narrative about the soldier’s experience in Vietnam. During the lesson plan, students will have a chance to hear firsthand accounts from veterans including a combat medic, a soldier who served on a destroyer, and others who paint compelling portraits of war. After primary source research is complete, students will process their discoveries in small groups and move to composing their narratives. At the end of the lesson, students will bring drafts of their work to a peer-editing session and have a chance to revise their narrative before completing the final product.
