End Black History Month?

Should Black History Month be ended? That’s the question explored by African American filmmaker Shukree Hassan Tilghman as he embarks on a cross-country campaign. Use this lesson plan and series of clips from Independent Lens’s “More Than a Month” to examine what the treatment of history tells us about race and power in America.

The accompanying “Whose History” educator guide provides a one-to-three day lesson plan designed to deepen students’ understanding of the film and to explore the question of how different cultural groups are acknowledged in American history, media and culture. The film asks the questions: How do we justify teaching American history as somehow separate from African American history? What does it mean that we have a Black History Month?
