Did you know that a typical person living in the United States creates between four and five pounds of unwanted material every day? This amounts to more than 200 million tons of waste each year. Most of this ends up in landfills. So how are everyday companies practicing “the three Rs” – reduce, reuse and recycle?
In this video from DESIGN SQUAD, students listen as engineer Erin Gately talks about the environmental aspects of her job with printer manufacturer Hewlett-Packard. Erin takes apart old printers and recycles nearly all of the parts so they can be used in new products. She also explains how they are designing new environmentally friendly printers, using recycled plastic and biodegradable material produced from corn instead of plastic.
