The police chief of tiny Chatham, NY understands the power of addiction. That’s why Peter Volkmann started the “Chatham Cares 4 U” or CC4U program. He says he’s “just a person in recovery trying to pay it forward.” There is evidence that what he’s doing is making a difference.

Chief Volkmann is following the  PAARI, or Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative, model.

All week long, the #citizenactive blog is looking at how our government institutions are dealing with  New York’s Opioid Crisis. We’re working with public broadcasters around the state in cooperation with New York’s Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. They want to help you Combat Addiction.

Tomorrow, we will be hearing from the commissioner of the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services or OASAS. Arlene Gonzalez-Sanchez will tell us what it’s like to run one of the largest addiction treatment, prevention and recovery systems in the country.
